About Airport World Map

Airport World Map plots every airport in the world that carries passengers — 6,340 of them across 238 countries, each with its IATA and ICAO codes, its size, its elevation and the town or city it serves.

The register behind it holds 86,286 entries, but most of them are private grass strips, hospital helipads and airfields that closed decades ago. This map keeps the ones you can actually arrive at: every large and medium airport, plus any smaller field with scheduled passenger service — which is what makes a short strip in the Alaskan interior or a seaplane base in the Maldives worth a pin.

Who is behind this site?

Airport World Map is built and maintained by Emil Björk, an independent developer based in Sweden. The site grew out of a passion for maps, travel and open data, alongside a professional background in IT consulting.

How it works

Every point is fetched from the OurAirports Overpass API, deduplicated, tagged by country and stored as a static GeoJSON file — no database, instant to load. Click any point to see a description from Wikipedia, a photo from Wikimedia Commons (or Mapillary as a fallback) and, where available, its Google rating.

Data freshness

The dataset is a snapshot of OurAirports, refreshed by hand rather than on a schedule.
